While pursuing his Fine Arts degree with a major in Advertising at the University of Santo Tomas, Herbert founded the band Moonstar88, where he still thrives as the lead guitarist nearly 25 years later. Despite his busy schedule of recording and touring, Herbert managed to graduate magna cum laude, demonstrating his commitment to both his music and academic pursuits.
Advertising eventually became Herbert’s chosen career path, starting with his role at J. Water Thompson (JWT) Manila. With his artistic prowess and creative ideas, he quickly ascended the corporate ladder, leaving a trail of awards behind him at JWT, DM9 JaymeSyfu DDB, and Young & Rubicam. However, it was his partnership with advertising idol Badong Abesamis that truly unleashed his leadership potential, leading to the establishment of their own agency, GIGIL. Together, they create captivating campaigns that attract accolades and clients alike.
Herbert’s remarkable ability to excel in multiple domains required creative time management. Balancing his advertising work, music career, and family commitments, he founded ‘Lakihan Mo Logo,’ a concert series featuring bands comprising Manila-based ad agency talent, providing a creative outlet for fellow advertisers. Herbert also organized benefit concerts, ‘Rockovery,’ to raise funds for the medical expenses of seriously ill members of the advertising industry.
Despite his busy schedule, Herbert places his family at the forefront of his life. Married to his wife Heidi since their mid-twenties, Herbert makes it a priority to have meals with his family every day, even inviting them to join him at work whenever possible. Creating quality time for bike rides, trips, and video games remains crucial for Herbert, who values his family’s approval of his daily outfits.
