Dr. Peter Brett, an experienced Oncologist certified by the Board, has dedicated over 25 years to private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2019, Dr. Brett embarked on a transformative journey by relocating to Saipan, an island in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). His primary goal was to establish a cancer center that would cater to the needs of the underserved and geographically isolated population of approximately 50,000 residents. The opening of the Northern Marianas Oncology Center in March 2020 marked a significant milestone for the CNMI.
Prior to Dr. Brett’s arrival, cancer patients diagnosed in the CNMI had to seek treatment off the island, incurring substantial expenses and enduring emotional isolation. The absence of family and friends, coupled with the financial burden of traveling, added to the already challenging journey of undergoing medical treatments. The fully-staffed Oncology Center now provides patients with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted cancer treatments, and minor surgical procedures. While patients in need of complex surgeries or radiation therapy still require off-island referrals, the Oncology Center ensures seamless coordination of their care.
In addition to caring for diagnosed patients, Dr. Brett actively engages in outreach programs aimed at educating the population and minimizing late-stage cancer diagnoses. Through these initiatives, he empowers the community by promoting healthy lifestyle choices that aid in preventing cancer formation and highlighting the significance of early detection screenings.
In March 2022, Dr. Peter Brett played a pivotal role in launching the Cancer and Associated Risks Early Screening (CARES) program. This program offers free cancer screenings to all CNMI residents, encompassing a variety of tests such as genetic color testing, mammograms, breast removal surgery, pap smears, colonoscopies, CT scans, and oral screenings for cancer detection. The comprehensive CARES program also provides cancer prevention counseling, vaccines, screening guidance, testing, and follow-up sessions.
Operating from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Monday through Friday, Dr. Peter Brett and his team at the CHCC Oncology Center are committed to delivering cancer care, screenings, and education on cancer prevention.
Dr. Peter Brett’s unwavering dedication to providing cancer care to underserved populations has had a profound impact on the CNMI. His commitment to educating the community about cancer prevention and facilitating free cancer screenings through the CARES program has enabled many residents to benefit from early detection and improved outcomes. Dr. Peter Brett’s work stands as a testament to the importance of accessible healthcare for all individuals, regardless of their geographical location.
